The Indian state of West Bengal has witnessed intense protests following the rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl. The child's body was discovered in a pond on Sunday, a day after her disappearance was reported by her family. This tragic incident occurred in Surjyapur village, near Kolkata, and has sparked violent demonstrations, leading to a mob lynching of an innocent man and the police shooting of a suspect. Three additional individuals have been arrested and remain in custody.

Family members, along with villagers, reviewed CCTV footage from nearby establishments, identifying her with Prabhash Mondal, a local man who was later killed by police. The following morning, a mob apprehended Mondal and handed him over to authorities. Subsequently, the girl's body was found in a sack in the pond, allegedly after Mondal directed police to the location. The post-mortem report indicated drowning as the cause of death, suggesting she might have been alive when placed in the water.
Community Outrage and Legal Developments
Anger over the incident resulted in widespread vandalism, with roads, shops, and a railway station being damaged. A young man was fatally beaten by the crowd, whom Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari later declared innocent. In response to the unrest, police have filed three cases and detained 40 individuals. A prohibition on public gatherings is in place, and heavy police and paramilitary forces have been deployed to maintain order.
