F-16 Fighter Jet Lands in Emergency at Zakynthos Airport
An F-16 fighter jet belonging to the Hellenic Air Force executed an emergency landing at Zakynthos airport, causing the temporary shutdown of one of Greece's major summer travel hubs. The incident occurred on a Thursday afternoon, around 13:45 local time (10:45 GMT), during a training mission, according to a statement from the air force.
Technical Fault Leads to Emergency Landing
The pilot of the aircraft reported a technical problem before the landing. Although specific details have not been confirmed by the Hellenic Air Force, Greek media sources suggested the presence of a fire warning light onboard. Upon landing, the aircraft caught fire on the runway, necessitating an immediate response from the airport's emergency services.
Impact on Airport Operations
The F-16 landed without using its landing gear, which caused it to skid along the runway for several meters, according to reports from Greece's Kathimerini newspaper. Video footage circulating on social media depicted the burning aircraft being extinguished by firefighters. Consequently, the airport's operations were halted, with all flights delayed until 21:00 that day, affecting numerous travelers at the height of the summer tourist season.
Aircraft and Pilot Status
The fighter jet involved in the incident was part of the 335 Squadron from the 116th Combat Wing, based at Araxos Air Base in western Greece. Fortunately, the pilot emerged from the incident unharmed, as confirmed by the air force. Investigations into the cause of the incident are ongoing.
Efforts to Resume Operations
A specialized team from the air force was dispatched to Zakynthos to facilitate the removal of the jet from the runway, aiming to restore normal airport operations. As the summer season commences, the airport is a critical point for incoming tourists, particularly from the UK.
