Darline Graham Nordone Steps In as Interim Senator
Following the death of U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, his sister, Darline Graham Nordone, has been appointed to serve as his temporary successor. The appointment was announced by South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster on Monday, shortly after Graham passed away from an aortic tear.
Governor McMaster praised Nordone as Graham's "darling little sister," expressing confidence that she would carry on her brother's work. "It is such an honor. Lindsey has always been there for me, and now I will be there for him," Nordone commented on her new role.
Political and Family Support for Nordone
The decision to appoint Nordone was supported by several officials, including former President Donald Trump, who characterized it as a tribute to Graham. The senator had been particularly close to his sister, having legally adopted her after their parents passed away during their youth.
In the U.S., there is a historical precedent for family members stepping in to complete the terms of deceased lawmakers. Data from the U.S. House of Representatives in 2025 showed that 45 widowed women have succeeded their late husbands in Congress, with 38 taking seats in the House and eight in the Senate.
Governor McMaster confirmed that Nordone would serve out the remainder of Graham's term, which concludes in 2027. "Lindsey took care of his little sister," McMaster stated, "It's my honor to ask his little sister, Darline Graham Nordone, to finish his work for him now."
A Brief Look at Darline Graham Nordone
Nordone and Graham shared a close relationship, especially after the loss of their parents. Graham was 22 and Nordone was 13 when they faced the tragedy of losing their mother and father within a short span. Nordone, a mother of two, has dedicated her career to helping individuals with disabilities secure employment.
Although she has no previous experience in public office, Nordone has been a consistent presence in her brother's political life. Lindsey Graham once mentioned that if he became president, Nordone would serve as his first lady. Neither Nordone nor Governor McMaster has clarified whether she intends to run for a full six-year Senate term after 2027.
Lindsey Graham's Legacy
Senator Graham, first elected to the Senate in 2002, was a prominent figure in Washington, known for his strong stance on foreign policy and advocacy for U.S. military intervention overseas. He had recently returned from a visit to Kyiv, Ukraine, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelensky, and had been in contact with Trump shortly before his death.
Prior to Graham's passing, the Senate was composed of a 53-47 Republican majority over the Democrats, with both parties vying for control in the upcoming November elections. Graham's office noted that his death certificate is pending until all toxicological and microscopic tests are concluded.
