Tragic Speedboat Accident in Vietnam Claims 15 Lives, Including Indian Tourists

Speedboat Tragedy in Vietnam

A devastating incident occurred in southern Vietnam when a speedboat carrying Indian tourists capsized, resulting in the tragic deaths of 15 individuals, local authorities report. The vessel was transporting 32 Indian tourists and four crew members when it overturned approximately 400 meters from Hon May Rut Ngoai island on Saturday.

The speedboat capsized amid rough sea conditions, which are believed to have contributed to the accident. Nearby tourist vessels quickly responded to the distress, rescuing several passengers trapped inside the overturned boat, according to Vietnam's VnExpress.

Rescue Efforts and Casualties

Out of those on board, 21 people were successfully rescued, but unfortunately, the fatalities were reported to include Indian citizens. The incident underscores the risks involved in maritime travel, especially under adverse weather conditions. Hon May Rut Ngoai, part of the An Thoi Archipelago in the Gulf of Thailand, is a popular destination for island-hopping tours.

Located about 10 kilometers south of Phu Quoc, Vietnam's largest island, the area is frequented by tourists. Nguyen Tien Hai, a senior official, stated that efforts were focused on rescue and emergency care for survivors. He noted that heavy winds and high waves might have led to the capsizing.

Reactions and Official Statements

The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep sorrow over the incident, extending condolences to the families of the deceased and wishing a swift recovery for the injured survivors. His statement was shared on social media, reflecting the global reach of the tragedy.

The Indian embassy in Vietnam has described the event as tragic and has released the full list of Indian nationals who were aboard the speedboat. Additionally, the embassy has established hotlines to assist the affected families with information and support.

As the rescue operations continue, the focus remains on confirming the exact number of casualties and ensuring that all survivors receive the necessary medical attention.
