Suspect in Monaco Bombing Discovered Deceased in Ukraine
A Ukrainian woman suspected of conducting a parcel bombing in Monaco has been found dead in Ukraine, according to the nation's security service. The bombing incident had injured a Ukrainian millionaire and his family, leading to a widespread search for the suspect.
Details of the Incident
Anastasiia Berezovska, 39, was implicated in the bombing that took place in Monaco on June 29. The explosion occurred in the entrance hall of an apartment building, affecting three individuals, including two who were seriously injured. Berezovska fled Monaco after the attack, prompting a cross-border manhunt.
Authorities in Ukraine reported that her body was discovered in a forest in the Kyiv region, bearing gunshot wounds to the head. Two individuals, one of whom is currently serving in Ukraine's military intelligence, have been charged with her murder.
Investigation and Arrests
Berezovska reportedly returned to Ukraine on July 1, two days after the bombing. The prosecutor general's office revealed that she met with two men in a car in the Kyiv area two days later. It is alleged that during this meeting, she was killed.
The suspects, including a former law enforcement officer and a current intelligence officer, were under investigation for potentially assisting in the Monaco attack. They had transferred funds to Berezovska's accounts, both crypto and bank, suggesting a financial link.
The intelligence officer confessed to the murder, carried out alongside another suspect. Both individuals now face charges of intentional murder with prior conspiracy by a group.
Search Uncovers Potential Evidence
During a search of the former law enforcement officer's home, authorities found a basement room they described as resembling a torture chamber. Although the prosecutor general's office stated there was no evidence linking this room to Berezovska's murder, they released a video showing a mat with small blood spots, axes, a pickaxe, and other items.
Prior Disguise and Escape
Monaco authorities noted that Berezovska had disguised herself as a man to execute the bombing. After the attack, she allegedly traveled to Italy and Germany. German police searched an apartment in Hesse rented by a fleeing Ukrainian woman matching Berezovska's description.
Interpol had issued a red notice for Berezovska, marking her as wanted for attempted murder and placing an explosive device. Ukrainian authorities have shared information with Monaco officials as they continue to investigate possible additional suspects.
Victims and Background
The victims of the Monaco bombing have not been officially identified by authorities. However, local media identified them as Vadym Yermolaiev, his partner, and his 13-year-old son. Yermolaiev, a real estate developer, was ranked as the 39th richest Ukrainian by Forbes in 2020, with a fortune of $230 million. He holds Cypriot citizenship and resides in Monaco.
