In a statement released alongside a photograph featuring McConnell and his wife, Elaine Chao, the senator explained that he briefly lost consciousness after his fall, which necessitated a hospital visit. McConnell assured the public that he underwent comprehensive medical testing, which ruled out fractures, concussions, heart attacks, strokes, tumors, and hemorrhages.
McConnell also addressed the widespread speculation about his absence, acknowledging the cultural reluctance of his generation to discuss the vulnerabilities associated with aging. He connected his recent health issues to ongoing challenges from childhood polio, which left part of his left leg paralyzed.
