Israeli Airstrike Targets Police Facility
An Israeli airstrike on a Hamas-controlled police station in northern Gaza has led to the deaths of at least seven individuals, according to health and police officials. Among the deceased are a senior officer and a woman. The attack occurred in the Jabalia region, a bustling area near a market.
Details of the Incident
Eyewitnesses reported that the strike involved four missiles launched from an Israeli drone. The Gaza interior ministry, affiliated with Hamas, identified the head of the local police, Col Mohammed Marwan Salem, as one of the victims. The ministry described the attack as a "massacre."
The Israeli military stated that Marwan was responsible for military security within Hamas's Central Jabalia Battalion. They also reported the deaths of three other individuals they referred to as "terrorists," naming them as Abdul Malik al-Jabin, Ghassan al-Daqas, and Yaman Abu Obeida. The first two were identified as police officers.
Reactions and Additional Casualties
The casualties were transported to al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City. Mohammed Moussa, the uncle of one of the deceased officers, contested the Israeli military's characterization, asserting his nephew was a civilian performing police duties. "He was on patrol in a civilian vehicle when targeted," Moussa stated, questioning the rationale behind the attack.
Additional fatalities were reported in southern Gaza. An Israeli strike in Khan Younis resulted in one death and three injuries, while another incident in Rafah saw the death of a 10-year-old boy, Muataz Abu Shaar, reportedly due to Israeli gunfire. The Israeli military has yet to comment on these reports.
Ongoing Tensions Despite Ceasefire
Both Israeli and Hamas forces have accused one another of frequent ceasefire breaches since October of the previous year. The health ministry in Gaza claims that Israeli actions have resulted in over 1,110 deaths since then, whereas Israeli authorities report four soldier fatalities due to Palestinian attacks.
The conflict traces back to an assault by Hamas on southern Israel in October 2023, which resulted in about 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages. Israel's ensuing military response in Gaza has led to significant casualties, with the territory's health ministry reporting over 73,230 deaths.
